Where to find a 3D tracking system?

I’m working on a college project, and I need something that can give a 3D position of a marker in space. I heard there was a 3D tracking system for the ball for European football, where the ball had a microwave frequency ID tag inside, and it was accurate to a couple centimeters. Is there anything I can do that would be similar? Something fast and accurate?

Some examples of folks hacking Microsoft’s TV-top gaming device may interest you. Cheap enough also, called a Kinect. Also, search on youtube for OpenCV. Some student projects I saw were very impressive tracking a ball being batted with a hockey stick.
